Renewable energy sources like solar panels are difficult to track. Some solar panels are privately-owned, can be found on the rooftops of homes, while others are comprised of huge installations spanning vast swaths of land. Knowing how many solar panels there are in the U.S., and what their power-generating capabilities are is important since this sort of data is vital in determining which locations offer the least cloud cover. It’s seemingly trivial info like this that can mean millions of dollars in earnings for solar energy companies, reduced carbon emissions and better ways to incentivize renewable energy businesses. To see how Stanford University engineers surveyed all of the solar panels in America with AI, here’s the full story: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/how-artificial-intelligence-spotted-every-solar-panel-in-the-u-s
