Movies sometimes portray law enforcement agencies using AI to identify terrorists from surveillance videos in public areas, making it easier to identify and apprehend them; while this is a fictional portrayal of AI in law enforcement, the Japanese National Police Agency may soon make this a reality.

In the next fiscal year, Japan’s NPA will experiment with using AI to identify “suspicious people”, determine the make and model of cars used by suspects from surveillance videos and to analyze suspicious financial transactions.

If proven effective, these applications of AI will be deployed to secure the 2020 Olympics and the Paralympics events in Tokyo.
